How to Paint Words on Your Wooden Sign!

In this post, I’m going to show you how to add words on your DIY wooden signs! This is the secret you’ve been waiting for! You will no longer need to print backwards, cut stencils, trace chalk, or buy expensive stencils or equipment!

AND THE SECRET IS…

CARBON PAPER!

Let’s get started!

Materials You Will Need: Carbon Paper, Plain Piece of Wood, Printer, Printer Paper, Pen, Paint Pen, Paint, Paint Brush, Embellishments (optional), a Kitty Friend {like the one shown below (optional)}

First, let’s paint our sign. If you want the rustic look, make sure to leave some edges bare. Just kind of slap some paint on there!

While that dries, you can design your text in Word, PicMonkey, or any other program with fonts!  I used the font “CoffeeBreak” on PicMonkey for my “hello”. You can download this design at the end of this post!

Then, print out your text on regular printer paper.

Next, place your carbon paper onto your painted wood where you want to add the text. My carbon paper is well loved. But, it still works great! They last a long time! Make sure the black side is facing down against the wood, so that it will make a copy of your text. I purchased my carbon paper here.

Place your printer paper on top of the carbon paper.

Trace the outside of your lettering. It doesn’t have to be perfect.

Once you remove your paper and carbon paper, you will have a nice outline of your word(s). Now, simply trace and fill in with a paint pen!

It’s so easy! The sky is your limit!

Want to try it? You can print the hello “stencil” I used here!

Here are some of the many signs I’ve made using this technique.

Catnip Tidbit:  At the end of most blog posts, you will find a “Catnip Tidbit”. Each tidbit will just be some useful (or sometimes not) information about life…and cats. Enjoy! Today’s Catnip Tidbit: Simon found himself a good friend! Good friends are a treasure to the heart.
